I was not aware when I came here that this board started as a travel discussion board. I find that ironic, because I've visited 6 Continents, 34 Countries, and 28 States in the past 62 years.
Serendipitous?

It is interesting how organizations evolve.

For example, the Republican Party started as a progressive party urging the abolition of slavery. It lost it's soul when big money eventually took over. Now, when presented with the issue of slavery (forced labor, prostitution and other sex trades) in the Marianas Islands, Tom Delay, Jack Abramoff and their GOP cronies block any effort at eliminating the practices.

But, returning to the travel sphere, the Islands provide highly desired vactioning opportunites. The best part - it's all free if you're a GOP Congressman.

Mac

All of us have an interest in travel so the fact that you are a well travelled person and have an interest in what goes on in the World and ended up here may not be such a strange coincidence.

This board started when the Current Events portion of a travel board most of us participated in (and many still do) was shut down rather unceremoniously and without notice. It was probably for a variety of reasons not the least of which the site was selling advertising and us CE folks we're irking a lot of the other members with our outspoken views on any one of a number of topics which wasn't too condusive to selling ads I would wager. Some members were actively boycotting the site because of our views. I always  thought that travel and current World events sort of went hand in hand myself but I guess others disagreed.

Anyhow that was the other' sites owners call and their business so this forum was setup to keep the party going. It was probably for the best anyway as creating a new board has given us a lot more freedom to say whatever is on our minds without too much in the way of moderation. There are very few rules here and people should feel free to speak their mind about any topic (other than their personal thoughts about other posters).

You and the other new members are more than welcome here Mac and we could certainly use some new voices here. if anyone knows of anyone else that is interested in participating here please feel free to invite them over.

Cheers, Andrew

yeah, the reaction of the travel board to a little political arguing was really extreme.  funny thing is, having been involved in some truly vicious internet arguments, like the mac-windoze wars, i thought it was rather tame.

great board for talking about the ilons, tho.

I don't see how anyone who does a lot of traveling can possibly afford to ignore current events. There are definitely some parts of the world (IMO) where one would literally be taking your life if your hands to visit (as an American at least) during the past ten years.
Which is why I always take my Calgary Stampeders sweatshirt with me.
 Cool

Nice travel tip, Mac. Unfortunately, my strong Southern accent makes it hard for me to pull that off.    Undecided

just do not wear white tennis shoes and you can go about anywhere

my cousin went on a dive boat trip to the Maldives.  First U.S. Citizen on the boat and when they stopped at islands people would come out to see the "american"

He met a man from Holland that has become his #1 dive partner.  He was here last weekend visiting from the land of windmills

The leave for indonesia in November on the next adventure

Never really had a problem anywhere I have been - always found it was the government not the people.

Rest assured little one there are plenty of Republicans and Congressman in the Caribbean.  Even your smiley candidate was in STT a couple weeks ago.  He was visiting the gov. and the people from his private villa up on the hill.  But the parade through CA made it a campagain stop for expensives.

I never had any problems traveling abroad in the past either.
Of course, back then there were not so many radical groups looking to score political points or a big payday by killing or kidnapping a "rich" American.
"Tinfoil hatters" come in all nationalities, so it wouldn't surprise me to discover that some people were firmly convinced that I must have some sort of CIA connection.

I doubt I will do any traveling in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, or Africa for some time to come. The rest of the world seems no more dangerous than New York City.
(I lived in New York for a few years, long, long ago.)
